I have no idea who will win, but I’ve now seen three of the nine movies nominated.  That’s, like, three more than I ever get to see before the awards ceremony. I saw Argo when it came out and loved it!  I was exhausted by the end of that movie and highly recommend anyone go see it.  We rented Beasts of the Southern Wild a week or so ago and again, loved it.  We experience the lives of an outcast Louisiana community, warts and all.  There’s love but dysfunction and all interpreted by a 5 or 6 year old girl.  Beautifully done.

Today my husband was out of town so I went to see Lincoln.  What a great movie!  Although there are brief scenes depicting the horrific and dirty nature of war, the movie is dialogue driven.  Almost a play without going as far as Meryl Streep’s, Doubt, a few years ago.  The story focuses on the time leading up to the ratification of the 13th amendment ending slavery and involuntary servitude forever in the United States.  The political game was fascinating to watch.  The meetings of the House were more akin to watching the English parliament than what our House looks like today.  We’re far more polite than perhaps we should be.

There’s fictional license I’m sure but that said, I think there was more simplification than fiction.  At one point, a visiting character says that the southern states were fighting solely to keep slavery alive.  I don’t think anyone can render the reason for this war to one line but I understand it supported the focus for the movie which was how the 13th amendment was passed.

So Is It A Good Story?  I thoroughly enjoyed myself.  I think this movie is worth the $10 to get in and $15 to snack on something…. well, maybe sneak a candy bar and water bottle in because really, those concessions are crazy expensive.
